존스 홉킨스 대학은 지식은 전달하는 것이 아니라 발견하는 것이라는 건학이념과 함께 1876년에 개교하였다. 초대 총장인 Daniel Coit Gilman은 대학의 목표 "지식의 전달이 아닌 욕구의 충족, 방법론의 제시, 능력의 개발, 판단력의 강화와 지적 도덕적 힘의 앙양"이라고 밝혔다. 존스 홉킨스 대학은 학부생에게 연구에 중점을 둔 교육을 제공함으로써 창의적인 학자정신을 강조하고 있다. 현재 약 4,400명의 학부생이 재학중인 존스 홉킨스 대학의 캠퍼스는 140에이커 규모로, 볼티모어 도심에서 3마일 거리에 위치해 있다. Krieger School of Arts and Sciences와 Whiting School of Engineering의 학과는 공학, 인문학, 자연과학과 사회화학 분야를 망라하고 있다. 학과 영역에 해당되지 않는 관심분야를 가진 학생은 개인 프로그램을 짜거나 교수의 지도를 받아서 개인연구를 진행할 수 있다.

조기 졸업도 가능하고, 우수한 학생은 4년 내에 학사와 석사 학위를 동시에 취득할 수 있다. 신입생 필수과정은 없으며, 학생은 작문 과정을 포함하는 분야별 학점 배분 및 전공필수과정을 충족해야 한다. 졸업에는 120학점이 필요하고, 1년에는 4개월 단위의 2학기와 1개월의 중간학기가 있다.

대학의 Sheridan Libraries System은 총 350만 권 이상의 장서, 30,000종 이상의 학술지, 70만 권의 전자책, 8,000개의 비디오/DVD와 215,000 개의 지도를 소장하고 있다. Information Technology@Johns Hopkins는 교내 컴퓨터망을 제공하며, 무선 인터넷도 교내 대부분의 장소에서 사용할 수 있다. Bloomberg Center for Physics and Astronomy에는 물리학과와 천문학과가 입주해 있으며, NASA와 공동으로 설치한 원자외선 분광 탐사체 위성 통제소가 있다. Mattin Student Arts Center에는 Swirnow Center, 무용실, 음악 연습실, 영화/디지털실,, 암실, 카페, 미술실과 학생 모임공간 등이 있다. 타 지역 출신 1, 2학년은 의무적으로 기숙사 생활을 하게 되어 있다. 대학 맞은편에 있는 대학 소유 주거단지에는 3, 4학년이 거주한다.
